Obtaining
Successful Runecrafting actions that award positive base XP can unlock Rune Moth. Failed actions and actions with zero XP do not roll for the pet. The roll stops after the account owns it.
Drop chance
The chance per successful action is 1 − exp(−X / 2,500,000), where X is that action's base XP, capped at 1,000,000 for this roll. Bonus XP does not increase the chance.

Chances are rounded. These are separate pet rolls rather than entries in the action's item drop table.
Passive effect
2% chance to preserve successful action ingredients. The effect is active from account ownership; Rune Moth does not need to be the equipped follower.
On a successful Runecrafting action, the perk can preserve the action's entire ingredient batch while still awarding its output and XP. The required ingredients must be present to start the action. Failed actions do not receive this preservation roll.
